Story and Video by Tommy Caldwell

When we got an email from Tom Caldwell, better known as TommyCInsta asking if we wanted to partner up for an upcoming video project we were all ears. We’ve long been fans of the old school British video style, fish eyes, interesting music and that island humor. After hearing Tommy and his crew of British bruisers were planning a wild road trip through BC with stops at all the key places, we couldn’t wait to see what he was going to capture. The video and stories from their travels are exactly what we expected, although, we didn’t quite expect so many of the crew to be flying home with with injuries. After watching some of the gaps and hits they were going for however, we understood these boys were going for broke!

I’d never been to Whistler before. The furthest I’d gotten across Canada was Quebec, and that had to change. I got word of a free space on Joel Anderson’s yearly Whistler trip, and there was literally zero chance that I was going miss it. My bike and camera were ready for the chaos.

In a jet lagged daze we picked up the hire truck. Crammed it full of 6 people, 6 bikes and all the luggage and headed down the Sea to Sky highway.

Unfortunately, early in the trip Toby Down hit the deck, broke his elbow and hand, racked up a big old medical bill, and then flew home early for surgery. It might be MTB mecca but it can certainly bite if you stop concentrating.

‘I can’t really say what happened, to put a long story short. Basically things got out of hand and I ended up dislocating and shattering my elbow and breaking my wrist about 4 hours into the first day. Nightmare. Anyway I flew home after the docs got their fill of money and I had surgery two weeks later (took two weeks for the savage swelling to go down enough) I will be back next year…as I didn’t get my fill of Dirt Merchant!’

We hit up Kamloops Bike Ranch and the Anderson brothers were in their element.. and this was just the first jump.

Joel getting twisted up on the hip. I can see why so many people rave about the bike ranch. It’s pretty bonkers that place is legit. They are some steep ass jumps.

The terrain and landscape is wildly different to the coastal mountains where Whistler sits. Felt like I was in Spain..

Joel and I were both in our element that day. Another run? Another angle. Oh go on then.

Battle of the brothers.. whip A, or whip B?

The famous Kamloops hip. I’d seen this thing in videos and magazines for years. It was crazy to actually be there and to shoot it. Did not expect to see such a clicked table from Joel.. one of my favourite images ever for sure.

On our last day in Whistler, Joel took a massive slam. At the bottom of Dwayne Johnson, he tried to triple the final jump. It turned sour pretty fast..

‘The god damn triple. Tommy C and I spotted the triple at the bottom of the Dwayne Johnson track. Although the triple isn’t particularly large we noticed nobody had done it yet.. and thought it maybe a cool shot for the video. Upon arriving at the triple with intent to jump I noticed some large branches very close to where I would be in the air, being 21 and in “invincible whistler mode” I didn’t think much of it assuming I’d be further to the right and all would be well. Once off the lip I remember thinking, “shit”. I ducked to maybe save the situation but the branches pushed me off the side.. apart from that I can’t remember anything useful until I was telling the woman in hospital my address! Ahah! Now I’ve got a hell of a scab on my finger and my 8th broken collarbone!! Won’t be long before I’m back. Plenty of Xbox to play with Toby while everyone else is at work!’

So with two men down, we carried on with the trip with 3 days left. We got the ferry across to Langdale, stayed in Sechelt and headed to Coast Gravity Park for the day. Cool little spot, but with Joel down and his brother taking care of his concussed head, the vibe had dropped and we realised it was time to head home.
