There are a lot of factors that go into creating the ideal mountain biking location. The topography is probably the most important; you gotta have mountains, right? Then it is the dirt. That ideal sandy loam so sought after by trail builders the world over; packs well, drains well, light enough to throw some roost, but dense enough that it rolls fast. How about the community? It sure helps if there is already a dedicated cadre of trail building pros working the slopes. A couple of cool local shops, and maybe some other activities to keep the whole family entertained. So, what do you get when all those factors come together?
There have been rumors of such a place just west of Portland, on the Oregon Coast. A place where some of the world’s best freeriders have seen the possibilities that lie in hero-dirt hills rolling down to the ocean. You have probably seen the edits, Instagram clips, advertisements, all with nebulous references to ‘the Oregon Coast’ as the location.
IT’S TIME TO PUT THIS MECCA OF MTB ON THE MAP.
“The Tillamook Off-Road Trail Alliance is proud to announce that we are working in partnership with the Siuslaw NF, Hebo Ranger District in the planning of a possible mountain bike park located just outside of Pacific City.
The trail system is exploring the possibilities for a mix of shuttle-access freeride, downhill, and all-mountain trails to the Tillamook area, with trail options suitable for riders of all ages and abilities.”
“The Oregon Coast has some of the best trail building dirt and topography in the world” says local trail-building legend Josh Venti. “The sandy loam we have here in Tillamook county is ideal to build with, it’s what allows us to make trails that are progressive, that push what riders are capable of, but still be forgiving enough to handle the mistakes that often go along with pushing personal boundaries. It offers riders a perfect balance of grip and speed, drains well, never gets too dry thanks to the cool breeze off the ocean.”
We want to share our gratitude for being able to craft these trails from traditional Nestucca, Tillamook and Siletz tribal lands.
Ensuring that these trails are built to world-class standards is a costly endeavor. To that end, TORTA is hosting a fundraiser with support from Norco Bicycles, Lolo Racks, Dakine and Bubs Naturals. By purchasing a TORTA sticker, you’ll be automatically entered to win one of 3 amazing prizes.
