Releases the RAW Steel Hardtail MTB

The new MASON RAW steel MTB is both a logical next step for Mason and a venture into new territories for our brand. Following on from our adventure bikes, the Bokeh and the InSearchOf but also being our first dedicated flat bar mountain bike. It is a true Trail/Travel bike.

The RAW is a UK made steel trail bike that wants you to take it on adventures. As dictated by our Mason DNA, drawing on 8 years of #FastFar bicycle design and frame development in conjunction with world class riders such as Josh Ibbett and Angus Young. The RAW makes for a fast, engaging and  spirited ride. The custom shaped Dedacciai Zero/Zero Uno tubeset with Reynolds seat tube offer class-leading toughness and weight, combined with excellent pedalling feel, ride quality and efficiency. The geometry is modern and progressive enough to provide stability at speed and manageable handling on the limit whilst remaining lively and involving at all speeds. When loaded for bike packing and multi-day adventures the RAW’s stability really shines and traction is absolute.

The RAW is fabricated and finished in the UK by our friends at Five Land Bikes. They are some of the most highly skilled frame fabricators in the world, renowned in the UK frame building industry and the quality of their work is astonishing. Our partnership has been a collaborative process and Five Land have contributed their expertise to create a finely tuned hardtail from both manufacturing and riding perspectives.

Geometry Highlights:
66º (sagged) head tube angle designed to work with short offset forks and provide stable, predictable handling when descending, whilst avoiding the ‘pushing the barrow’ feel at slow speeds and when climbing.
75º (effective, sagged) seat tube angle ensures that rider weight is centred when climbing, making fully loaded and seated climbing as untaxing as possible. 0.5º steeper XL ST angle keeps the ride-feel and balance of the largest frame correct and avoids the longer limbed rider feeling too ‘slung over the back’.
Roomy reach figures (471mm L) designed for use with shorter stems for an agile handling balance.
60mm moderate bottom bracket drop is a considered balance between cornering stability and ground clearance for pedalling through the chunk with a loaded bike.

Tubeset Highlights:
As with all MASON frames, the tubes are carefully considered and each tube is custom formed to perform in the optimum way for it’s particular function in the frameset.
HT: Machined from Reynolds 631 tubing, by BEAR Frame Supplies in the UK. ‘Ring-Reinforced’ and internally machined for bearing seat accuracy and long life.
TT: Starting with a Ø35/31.8mm taper tube, Dedacciai ovalise and shape this tube to our spec. The tube is wide, flat and stable where it meets the Ø44mm HT and tapers back to perfectly meet the Ø34.9 ST. 0.8/0.6/0.8 progressively butted, wall dimensions.
ST: The Reynolds UK Seat Tube is provided straight and then has the custom bend formed for MASON in the Five Land workshop. Providing clearance for the large 29” tyre rolling radius, whilst still maintaining a short rear centre for precise and lively handling, along with great climbing ability. Internally reduced to 31.6 to work with all dropper posts.
DT: An already very special progressive butted Ø1.0/0.6/0.8mm Dedacciai Zero Uno tube is then given our unique ‘DForm’ shape at the base, where it meets the BB shell. This keeps the weld very flat and wide, helping to provide a stable pedalling platform and avoiding excessive overlap onto the seat tube [this can lead to potential stress points on the rear of the ST].
SS’s: These are a functional, Italian work of art and were part of the inspiration for developing the latest MASON ‘Ultimate Adventure’ bikes. Ovalised to 23×14 where they meet the seat tube and tapering down to just 12mm where they meet the dropouts, the wide/flat section helps to give ‘core stability’ when stomping out of the saddle and the 0.7mm wall dimension and taper help provide a refined ride feel. The extra bend at the base gives big caliper clearance for a wide range of rotor/caliper combinations and further enhances compliance. Our signature, arched, Ø12mm bridge and chain-keeper add the final touches.
CS’s: Dedacciai Zero Uno, ovalised to 30×16 at the BB and tapering down to 12.5 at the dropouts. A custom MASON ‘flare & upsweep’ and final crimps and bends by Five Land, drop the stays to help eliminate chainslap, fine tune the tyre and chainring clearances and further enhance ride quality. The workmanship in the CS’s and SS’s combine to give our signature ‘boat-tail’ silhouette.
BB: Stainless steel, 73mm, BSA threaded.

Dedacciai Tubing Tech:
ZERO class tubing: State of the art, lightweight tubing, for racing and high performance frames.
ZERO UNO class tubing: Designed and engineered for travel and long range users.
All steel tubing is seamless and manufactured in the Dedacciai plant in Italy, using EN-10305-1 25CrMo4 steel made in Europe.
