Crankbrothers Stamp 7 Small Flat Pedal Review

CRANKBROTHERS STAMP 7 SMALL FLAT PEDAL REVIEW

Words by Caitlin Wilkenson  |  Photos by Michael Walker

Crankbrothers have a simple philosophy: to start with a clean state, and finish with a product that makes each ride better than the last. I believe they live up to this statement, as I was lucky to be given a set of their Stamp 7 Small Flat Pedals to review. I tested these babies out over a good few months, and now it’s time to share my thoughts.

ABOUT THE CRANKBROTHERS STAMP 7 SMALL FLAT PEDALS

Crankbrothers offer the Stamp 7 Flat Pedals in two sizes: Large or Small. The Small size has a footprint of 100mm x 100mm, whilst the larger size has a footprint of 114mm x 111mm. Crankbrothers state that if you wear a shoe size 5-10 (US) or 37-43 (EU), then you are an ideal fit for the Small pedals. Larger-footed riders should opt for the Large size for optimal comfort and traction.

The Crankbrothers Stamp 7 Flat Pedal is made out of forged 6061-T6 aluminum. They come in at a lightweight 345g per pair, but are strong enough to withstand those nasty rock hits. The concavity of each pedal is 1mm, thanks to the tapered 11mm to 13mm thick platform. Each pedal offers ten traction pins which are adjustable on each side. 8mm pins are fitted to the inner holes, whereas there are 10mm pins on the outer to add to the effective concavity and help to keep your feet “in” the pedals, safely in place. If you wanted to change up the arrangement or replace any damaged pins, they come with extra pins in the box.

The Stamp 7 flat pedals use a steel spindle and IGUS LL guide bearings, with a grease port at the end of the spindle to give them a quick refresh. Crankbrothers offers a 5 year warranty on their pedals and you can purchase a pedal refresh kit from their website if you feel they need serviced. They are also part of the match system, which combines the pedals with a pair of Crankbrothers flat pedal shoes for the ultimate interface. These pedals come in at $179.99/£159.99 and can be found in limited edition colorways and five main colorways.

THE DIRT

Upon first impressions, the Crankbrothers Stamp 7 flat pedals really did look the part. They are evidently high quality, and there’s some hella-cool colorways to choose from. I loved the black and blue splatter as it really complimented my bike, and they regularly received compliments on the uplift.

I was impressed by the fit of the Stamp 7 Small pedals with my EU38 (US 7) feet. The pedals provided plentiful support and gave a ton of confidence on the descents. I tested them with both the Crankbrothers Stamp Speedlace flat pedal shoes (review coming soon), and with alternative options from other brands. I found that while the Crankbrothers pedals felt good with all of my riding shoes, the Match System on the sole of the Crankbrothers shoe offered the best mixture of grip on the pedals whilst retaining the ability to reposition my feet.

The Stamp 7 pedals are also grippy in the wettest of conditions. I can be sure of this, as our “summer” has provided some of the wettest riding of my life! You will not be hovering off your pedals any time with these. I was a fan of their slim profile, offering plentiful clearance on the trail without compromising on concavity or spindle durability. I am a firm believer that small pedals are the way forward for anyone with small feet, as larger pedals can give too much platform that allows your feet to fall into awkward positions. The extra clearance is also much appreciated when threading the needle down technical trails.

I’ve managed to give these pedals a good whack on some granite and slate rock at different riding locations around the UK, and whilst they have signs of abuse, they have held up really well and the colorway is still vibrant as ever. The IGUS LL Bearing system has remained tight and smooth throughout testing, so it’s looking like it’ll be a while before I’ll need to grab a service kit for them.

The Wolf’s Last Word

If you are after a high-quality aluminum pedal with a small platform, the Crankbrothers Stamp 7 flat pedals are worth considering. These pedals offer excellent grip without your feet feeling like they are unable to move, especially when matched with a Crankbrothers shoe. Their serviceability means you can keep them reliable year after year, and the 5-Year warranty should give you peace of mind that they are in for the long haul, helping to offset the high initial investment.
