FIRST RIDE REPORT

2025 DEVINCI TROY

A CANADIAN CLASSIC IMPROVED

Words by Cole Gregg

From Air DH and EWS wins to your daily post work ride, the four previous generations of the Devinci Cycles Troy have been a sure-fire hit. The 2025 Troy and Troy ST aims to be your quiver killer and continue the storied tradition of a fun do-it-all machine. With a stellar build kit and made-in-Canada frame, the $5,549 price tag feels to be reasonable, but how does the performance stack up?

DEVINCI TROY HISTORY LESSON

Officially launched in 2014, the Troy was Devinci’s first 27.5” trail bike. Fast forward to late 2024 and we are seeing that 27.5” wheel come back – albeit in the rear only – with the dedicated MX build kits. Not on the mixed wheel bandwagon yet? Well that’s no problem, the 2025 Troy features a High/Low flip chip, allowing riders to choose the wheel size without compromising the geometry.

Also new for this year are two different variations of the bike. There is the Troy at 150mm rear and 160mm front travel, and then Devinci has also produced a Troy ST. The Troy ST is a shorter travel variant that comes in at 130mm rear and 150mm of travel up front. Rear wheel spacing also moves back to Boost 148 with a 55mm chainline, and there is a nifty storage compartment in the downtube to hide all your beavertails.

WHAT’S NEW

SUSPENSION | While the travel may have been bumped up by 10mm on both ends, Devinci’s Split Pivot rear suspension that was developed in partnership with Dave Weagle can still be found driving that rear shock. The Split Pivot design aims to separate the acceleration forces from the braking forces, creating a “hyperactive feel” under your feet for small bump compliance. This comes without sacrificing too much efficiency when it comes to pointing the Troy uphill. The RockShox Super Deluxe spec’d on our bike paired well with the suspension design and was easy to find a balance between small bump feel and bottom out support. I opted to run one additional spacer after a few bounces during initial setup and that was the ticket to a balanced overall feel.

GEOMETRY | The new Troy continues with the modern longer, lower and slacker changes. The Head Tube Angle is dropped considerably from 65.5º to 64º, Chainstays grow from 438mm to 442mm in size Large and XL. Sizes S and Medium receive a 432mm chainstay to adapt the ride characteristics for average height riders choosing those size frames. Stack increases to 631mm, and the bottom bracket gets 5mm lower to 343mm across all sizes. Even with all these adaptations Devinci has kept the reach number identical for a size large at 480mm.

FRAME DETAILS | One of the biggest changes in frame design allows for a downtube storage compartment dubbed “The Shed” which includes a storage bag for all your goodies. As expected the frame features internal cable routing and continues to come with Enduro Bearings throughout the frame. The seat post diameter drops to 31.6mm, but has an increased insertion length of 305mm for a size large. XL bikes get a 240mm dropper post spec’d from the factory – well done Devinci! There are both Chainstay and Downtube protection, but no included shuttle guard. But hey, it’s an Aluminum frame. It’ll be alright.

Speaking of the frame, it is of course made in Canada. The 6061-T6 is a special blend featured only on Devinci frames. The Optimum G04 material tubesets are claimed to provide great stiffness and durability for the harshest of riding conditions.

BUILD SPECS | At the time of launch there is only 1 build kit for each model, and I do not think you really would want anything different. The Lyrik Ultimate up front pairs extremely well with the Super Deluxe outback, and the Race Face wheels and bars fit the bill for what this bike is intended for. If you are not a fan of wireless shifting then that may be the only downside, as currently the bikes are only offered with SRAM’s T-Type drivetrain.

THE WOLF’S FIRST IMPRESSION

My time on the new Troy consisted of one big day in North Vancouver with a ripper of a tour guide, Steve Vanderhoek. I have to say, the video is a must watch! He took us media folk down some seriously fun raw trails. I was able to take the bike home with me to ride around my home trails for the next 6 weeks. Conditions were typical late summer dust piles and scary loose corners, but with that said I sure as heck had a great time behind the bars of the Troy.

Pointing the Troy up the hill was pleasant, and even with the smaller 27.5” wheel out back it had a snappy nature when putting the power down. The Split Pivot suspension design was comfortable on chatter and provided plenty of grip. There was a bit of bob when really pressing into the power, but two additional clicks of low speed really helped flatten it out. I feel that replacing the air shock for a coil would make this feeling even worse, but by no means would it be unrideable.

The 480mm cockpit was comfortable and the 200mm dropper was very much appreciated. The weight for a size medium comes in at a claimed 35.38lbs, and our size Large hid its weight very well. The 1.5º slacker headtube angle did not feel obtrusive on tighter switchbacks. The steeper seat angle came into play there, allowing me to stay up and over the bars.

2025 Devinci Troy

The Troy absolutely came to life once you got it rolling downhill. It was very fluttery and alive under my feet, without a nervous feeling when the speeds increased. The MX wheelset made transitioning weight in and out of corners a load of fun. I felt very little high speed compression feedback into my feet, a feeling that I have felt on older Devinci models. It just stayed smooth no matter the speed or terrain.

The ability I had to bunny hop over things was remarkable. Was it the bike, or was I just feeling it that day? I don’t know, but man was it a blast. Trying to keep up with Steve riding the trail blind was a near impossible task, so while I did get dropped I never lost confidence and comfort getting outside my own comfort zone on the Troy. The bike remained predictable with no strange quirks to note.

Over the six weeks of abuse so far, the Troy’s frame’s cable routing stayed quiet. I am yet to have any creaks develop, which is impressive for the dusty testing conditions. There were also no frame bolts that were in need of a re-torque, so clearly it’s been put together well!

In my eyes, Devinci has delivered on upping the ante with the introduction of this 5th generation Troy. It is a bike that you could live with day in and day out – hit some double extra gnarly stuff or take for a chill alpine pedal.

For me the playfulness of the bike sticks out the most. Backed with a lifetime warranty and solid build kit, I am left dreading the day Devinci asks for this bike back.

THE ALL-NEW TROY & TROY ST

ANY TRAIL. EVERY RIDE. NO EXCUSE.

Ten years ago, we launched the first Troy. At a time when trail bikes were overshadowed by long travel enduro rigs, the mid-travel Troy had to punch above its weight class if it was going to stand a chance.

Today, we’re proud to release the fifth generation of our flagship mountain bike. It’s our most advanced aluminum frame ever. It’s built to last, by hand, in Canada. And just like every Devinci mountain bike, it’s guaranteed for life.

We’ve completely refined every aspect of it. With more travel, a new aluminum construction, MX and full 29” compatibility, Split Pivot suspension technology, now using Boost 148, and a new short-travel version, the Troy once again stealths onto the scene as an unstoppable off-road workhorse.

FOCUS ON ALUMINUM

By focusing on aluminum builds for the launch of the updated platform, Devinci reaffirms its position as a leader in North American bicycle manufacturing. Our riders wanted aluminum frames with top-tier components, and we delivered. Available now are the Troy GX AXS and the Troy ST GX AXS. Both options emphasize on premium suspension, brakes, drivetrain, and cockpit, creating durable and high-performing packages that won’t let anyone down.

More build options will be available in spring 2025.

TROY

More than just a geo and color update, the Troy is part of a new breed of advanced aluminum frames to come out of our Chicoutimi factory. It has a new and streamlined profile, internal cable routing, updated geometry with size-specific chainstay lengths, 150mm of rear travel and a threaded bottom bracket. The Optimum G04 6061-T6 aluminum frame also has our ‘shed’ storage compartment in the downtube.

The Troy comes with mixed wheels (27.5’’ rear & 29’’ front) but is also full 29’’ compatible thanks to its geo-saver mullet flip chip.

TROY ST

A big change for the Troy family is the addition of the new Troy ST (short travel). We love the feel of short travel bikes and wanted to push the limit of capability in a 130mm platform. The Troy ST’s aluminum Split Pivot frame is made in Canada and has all the same features as the Troy, with updated geometry, size-specific chainstays, 3-bolt ISCG mount, integrated downtube storage, and enough room for a bottle even for the smaller sizes.

The Troy ST comes in with full 29’’ wheels in M, L, and XL sizes and full 27.5’’ wheels for XS and S.
