Vittoria added the Mostro to their gravity tire lineup last year, touting it to be the ultimate loose conditions gravity tire. As mountain bikers who love to ride in loose conditions, we were excited to hit the trails with the Vittoria Mostro and find out if they could offer the monstrous traction we hoped.

ABOUT THE VITTORIA MOSTRO TIRE

The Mostro is Vittoria’s latest gravity tire, designed for loose conditions. The tread profile is progressively siped and surface-stepped, which Vittoria claims will improve traction across rocks, roots, and loose surfaces. Using a 3-2 center knob pattern with consistent staggered side knobs, the Mostro is a unique tire in both appearance and trail feel.

The Vittoria Mostro is currently only available in one size – 29×2.4”. It is, however, available in two different casing and rubber compounds; Enduro or Enduro Race. 2.6” width and 27.5” diameter offerings are set to arrive in 2025.

Mostro Enduro

The standard Mostro Enduro features a 4Compound rubber, featuring Vittoria’s signature Graphene tech. The four different rubber compounds are used around the tire in a bid to increase durability and reduce rolling resistance – soft on the shoulder knobs, and harder in the center.

A 2-ply, 120 TPI nylon casing is used in a bid to offer good puncture protection without impacting rolling speed too severely. Rubber inserts are fitted to increase the sidewall’s stability, hoping to prevent rim strikes and burps.

The Mostro Enduro weighs in at 1460g in the 29×2.4” size, and costs €72.95.

Mostro Enduro Race

Riders and racers looking for maximum performance and puncture protection will find what they’re looking for in the Mostro’s Enduro Race guise. The Race version gets treated to Vittoria’s Race single compound, with Graphene and Silica additives to boost speed and grip.

60 TPI plies overlap to give single ply sidewalls and dual-ply under the tread. There’s an additional bead-to-bead protection layer, and there’s also a ‘puncture protection belt’ in the upper part of the casing, directly under the tread. Finally, a stability insert is fitted near the bead to support the tire and prevent protection.

These upgrades come at the cost of 30g, taking the Mostro Enduro Race’s overall weight to 1490g for the 29×2.4” size. Price-wise, it comes in at €77.95.

Enduro
– 4C compound with graphene
– 2-ply, 120 TPI nylon-reinforced casing
– Sidewall stability insert

Enduro Race

Vittoria Mostro Enduro Tire Review

THE DIRT

I logged good time on the Mostro across a wide range of conditions over the second half of 2024 and start of 2025, mostly fitted to my Starling MegaMurmur long-term test bike. From local pedal missions to lift-assisted downhills, I’ve put some good vert in on Vittoria’s latest enduro offering. Throughout testing, I fitted the Enduro Race to the front and the Enduro to the rear, to obtain the best compromise of traction and rolling resistance.

SETUP | Across a number of wheelsets, the Vittoria Mostro in both the Enduro and Enduro Race variants have proven to be very easy to set up tubeless. The bead fit was tight, but never problematic to get mounted onto the rim, and they popped in place with a boost chamber-equipped track pump without a fight.

As is typical, I varied tire pressures depending on the bike and conditions. For dry conditions and hard charging, 26 psi front and 28 psi rear felt to offer a good compromise of support and comfort for my 220lbs (100kg) mass. On a full-power eMTB (the Cube One55), I upped pressure to 27psi and 30psi. On the typically damp home trails, 24psi and 26psi were the magic numbers.

How Does The Vittoria Mostro Enduro and Enduro Race Combination Perform?

As their aggressive enduro tire, and with the name meaning “Monster”, I had anticipated monstrous traction. In fact, when we had seen prototypes of this tire on show at Sea Otter in 2024, it really did look like a tire that would offer some bite. The reality though was a tire with knob heights and spread that were a little more modest than monstrous.

Vittoria markets the Mostro as a tire that sits between their Mazza and Mota, aimed at excelling in loose conditions. However once mounted up, I’d argue its shallower and smaller knobs and more rounded profile sit it slightly less aggressive than the Mazza. There’s some good space in between the knobs, which aids in their ability to penetrate, but there’s only so far that they can go into soft mud or through loose-over-hard before the casing will bottom out.

On the trail, the character of the Mostro outperformed the aggression of how it looks, but I’d still be hesitant in suggesting it’s a loose conditions specialist. Instead, I found it to excel in offering a predictable tire for slightly drier conditions and on “hero” dirt. Consistent across lean angles, while the maximum traction may not have rivalled the best of them, there were no unexpected sudden losses. The rounded carcass no doubt played a part in this, reducing edge bite but offering great support and transition across all lean angles.

While the reduced knob profiles suffered in softer conditions, they benefitted in scenarios like hardpark berms and on rock and root. The weight and relatively soft compounds, yet limited knob penetration, meant the Mostro was a real generalist in the enduro space. Not lightning fast nor Velcro-like in most situations, they sat in a predictable yet underwhelming space.

Impressive was their resilience, surviving a couple of sharp rock-induced rim dents and enough alpine bikepark time to wear a rear tire to the end of its life. Zero punctures or notable burps, dependability was certainly a strong suit, though you would hope so at their weight.

The Wolf’s Last Word

A solid generalist, Vittoria’s Mostro enduro mountain bike tire offered predictable and well-rounded performance for mixed conditions. While it didn’t blow us away with incredible maximum traction, the consistency across lean angles and durability of the casing left us pleased to attack the trails on the Mostro, regardless of the terrain.
