REDMOND RE-LYTE HYDRATION REVIEW

A SCIENTIFIC REVIEW FOR THE TRAILS

Review by Kevin Halesworth

September 18, 2025

When it comes to electrolyte powders, most are either sugary, neon-colored disasters or vague, wishy-washy concoctions that leave you wondering if you’re drinking sports fuel or some untrustworthy witch’s brew. Redmond Re-Lyte steers clear of the nonsense. No sugar. No faff. Just proper electrolytes served straight up.

I tested Re-Lyte on a few long rides with around 3,800 ft of climbing over three-plus hours. To really put it to the test, I rode a couple of days with Re-Lyte in the bottle and one day without. Spoiler alert: I learned the hard way which was better. Read on to find out.

THE SCIENCE: SALT MEANS BUSINESS

Redmond Re-Lyte doesn’t muck about — it has a hefty 810 mg of sodium per sachet. Why so much? Because when you’re sweating buckets, it’s not just water you’re losing — it’s salt, and loads of it. Here’s the lowdown of the key ingredients:

  • Sodium (810 mg): The star of the show. Sodium keeps your body ticking without turning to mush when sweating like a sauna addict.
  • Potassium (400 mg): Potassium stops muscles and nerves from throwing tantrums halfway up a hill. Perfect for those who like pedaling.
  • Magnesium (50 mg): Magnesium calms twitchy muscles so you don’t look like you’ve had one too many at the pub.
  • Chloride (1280 mg): The counter-ion to sodium.
  • Calcium (60 mg): Helps muscles contract when nerves signal movement.
  • Coconut Water Powder (80 mg): Adds potassium and great flavor.

No sugar and no dodgy sweeteners, Re-Lyte is just good old-fashioned electrolytes with a dash of natural flavor. Whether you’re keto, paleo, or just fed up with the usual rubbish, Redmond Re-Lyte fits the bill. It’s made with Real Salt®, an unrefined ancient sea salt from Utah containing over 60 trace minerals.

FLAVORS: NOT YOUR NAN’S LEMONADE

  • Mixed Berry: Juicy, tangy berry punch, fruity without being sickly sweet—like a berry patch with a salty breeze.
  • Watermelon Salt: Oddly refreshing, like your grandma’s pickle jar got a fruity makeover. Perfect post-ride.
  • Strawberry Lemonade: Bright and zesty with a salty edge; posh lemonade that means business.
  • Mango: Sweet tropical sunshine with just enough salt to keep it grounded.
  • Pina Colada: Creamy coconut and pineapple vibes with a salty kick—holiday in your water bottle.
  • Watermelon Lime: Refreshing, slightly sweet with a tart lime zing; needs a good shake to avoid watered-down Ribena vibes.
  • Lemon Lime: Crisp, clean, citrusy with a savory salt balance—like a sparkling citrus spritz.
  • Unflavored: Straight-up salty water, briny and bold—great for mixing or broth but tough solo unless you’re a salt fanatic.

REDMOND RE-LYTE OPTIONS

Redmond sells their Re-Lyte in 60 serving tubs (1 serving is a 6.3g scoop) for $44.99 retail ($0.75/serv). The exception is the Unflavored Re-Lyte, which has the same rrp but provides 75 servings, making it $0.60 per serving.

ON THE TRAIL

SALT, SWEAT, AND GREAT FLAVORS
(EXCEPT THE UNFLAVORED, BRUTALLY ‘SEA’-LIKE)

I tested Re-Lyte on a hot, high-elevation ride in Central Oregon—5800 ft, 80-plus-degree day on dusty climbs and rock-littered descents that punish poor hydration. I particularly liked Mango and Pina Colada flavors, and found myself reaching for my thirst quencher more often than plain water.

Normally, by hour two, I’m wilting. But with Re-Lyte in the bottle? No cramps. No bonk. No brain fog. Legs held up, focus stayed sharp, and I wasn’t dragging myself like a burnt crisp over the finish line.

The next ride, I skipped Re-Lyte. Big mistake. I finished with a brutal headache. I knocked back a sachet post-ride and—no joke—within 20 minutes, the headache was gone. Hydration magic? Maybe. But it worked.

THE CATCH: QUITE SEDIMENTARY AND SALTY FOR SOME

Re-Lyte leaves sediment — that unrefined salt doesn’t fully dissolve, so your bottle looks like a science experiment. It’s harmless, but not pretty. Shake it like a martini, let it settle, then shake again—you’ll still get a bit of grit.

Also, it’s seriously salty. If you expect sugary sports drinks, this savory profile may surprise you. At around $0.75 per serving, its price is fairly reasonable — for clean hydration that works, it earns its keep.

The Wolf’s Last Word

The Verdict: For Those Who Know Their Salt

Redmond Re-Lyte doesn’t mess around. It’s for riders and athletes who want actual electrolytes without the sugar crash or rubbish additives. No sugar spikes, no mid-ride crashes—just solid, mineral-rich performance in your bottle. Training hard, sweating buckets, or just wanting to stay sharp? It’s well worth the price.

Out grinding hills or battling humid sessions? This stuff keeps your brain sharp and legs moving. You’ll either swear by it or sneak your mate’s Lucozade when no one’s looking.

It loses points for the salty “sea” flavor and premium price, but as a performance booster, it’s top-notch.

ABOUT THE WOLF

I grew up in the UK riding whatever I could get my hands on—from a brakeless BMX (perfect for bombing hills on dares) to a road bike I swore was built for epic grass skids, and finally a 40-pound mountain bike with ‘groundbreaking’ triple cranks. I was hooked.

I’ve been riding in the Pacific Northwest for about 25 years now, though it started with a rusted dumpster-find from my Florida days. That clunker became my first Oakridge trail bike—back when smartphones didn’t exist and trail maps were more myth than reality. I got lost often, climbed the wrong hills, and learned the land the hard way, getting fitter with every misstep.

All of it was done on a fully rigid, steel-framed Raleigh M-80 with rim brakes that sizzled like bacon in the wet.

Fast forward to now, and it feels like sci-fi—e-bikes, carbon everything, ABS hydraulic brakes, and suspension that floats. What a time to ride.
