More clicks, more control, more terrain to discover.

A New Take on Saddle Positioning

We had no idea how the SwitchGrade would be received when our prototype saddle angle adjuster first made its rounds back in January 2021. Turns out we weren’t alone thinking there had to be a better, more comfortable way to tackle long, steep, or technical climbs. Building on what we learned, and not ones to sit back, we released the gen 2 model in 2024 with some notable updates including modular compatibility, and convertibility from 3 to 2 positions.

We have been fortunate to have incredible support from our customers and community from day one. Over the years one request came up consistently: more control over saddle positioning. While the ‘what’ was clear, we dug deeper to understand the ‘why’ behind it.

What we learned surprised us. And the reasons behind the requests were more nuanced than we expected.

The number one reason customers wanted more control over saddle angles was to handle a wider range of climbs, from low grade to ultra steep, ranging from 5% and in some cases exceeding 40%. We also learned that a growing number of customers were using SwitchGrades for different riding disciplines such as endurance races, gravel riding, bike-packing, and more.

Listening to and acting on customer feedback is vitally important to us, forming the backbone of our innovation and development process. We went back to the drawing board and designed the SwitchGrade Pro from the ground up introducing two new saddle positioning technologies designed to meet our customers’ requests. For you keeners, you may have seen a prototype making the rounds at Sea Otter earlier this year.

And now, after 2 years of development, we’re excited to reveal the latest addition to our lineup of ergonomic-focused riding solutions. Meet the SwitchGrade Pro.

Higher Density Indexing

First up is Loc8™ – a variation of our saddle positioning system, aptly named due to its role of “locating” and “locking” a saddle’s position while giving a nod to the number of available positions.

Loc8™ is our mechanical indexing system that provides up to 8 discrete saddle positions separated by 5 degrees. What’s unique about the Loc8 method is that it allows the SwitchGrade Pro to rotate freely while the lever is disengaged, then positively re-index at any position when released – simply drop and lock. Refined granular indexing makes mid-flight adjustments faster and easier by eliminating the need to “hunt” for engagement.

User-defined Rotation Limits

Another new feature we’re proud to introduce is Climb-it Control™ which lets riders set independent hard stops – fore and aft – to prevent over-rotation.

Climb-it Control™ works similarly to your derailleur’s inbound and outbound limiters. At the heart of the system is a trypophobiac’s nightmare consisting of a honeycomb matrix of holes and small limit screws at either end used to govern movement. Each staggered hole is perfectly aligned with a distinct 5-degree step. Using the fore and aft limit screws, riders can specify how much forward and rearward tilt they desire.

Here are some application examples:

  • For winch and plummet enduro riding, keep the system open with enough climbing detents to manage a variety of grades
  • Planning a big e-bike powered ride in the Swiss Alps? Keep the system fully open to counter the most extreme slope variations both climbing and descending
  • For multi-stage endurance races, limit range to 5 or 10 degrees
  • Superman seat grabs at the Whistler Bike Park your thing? Or maybe you rely on park lifts that hook onto your saddle? No sweat! Use Climb-it Control to lock the SwitchGrade Pro out completely so it’s just like a fixed-in-place saddle.

With Climb-it Control you have endless configurations!

Expanded Saddle Tilt Range

TL;DR: to make the SwitchGrade Pro genuinely useful across disciplines, we needed a tilt range that was wide enough to matter, but not so wide it compromised strength and simplicity.

There are a multitude of competing and complementary variables that affect how we set up our bikes with virtually endless permutations. Actual and effective seat tube angles, seatpost geometries and dimensions, saddle profiles and composition, not to mention our personal fitness levels, comfort thresholds, and performance goals. Each variable contributes to our ‘preferred’ saddle position. But engineering a solution that works within such hard constraints is hard. Like really, really, hard.

Something for everyone, but only you.

While Loc8 and Climb-it Control work together to inch closer to saddle position perfection, taking us past the finish line meant identifying a saddle range capable of meeting the needs for most riders across different disciplines.

The SwitchGrade Pro features a 35-degree saddle tilt range: 20 degrees forward from mid-point (4 clicks), and 15 degrees back (3 clicks). Saddle angle tilt range is vitally important – more than most people think – which is why we put a lot of time and thought into it. For example, consider the following:

  • Too shallow an angle (ie. anything less than 7 degrees) won’t work for ebikes which can grind up steeper climbs than non-powered bikes. Depending on system weight (bike and rider), 3 to 4 degrees of saddle tilt may be lost instantly to suspension sag which increases the steeper the climb due to load distribution inching rearward. Exacerbating the issue is the fact that EMTB’s typically have lower anti-squat since they rely on power for climbing.
  • At the other end of the spectrum, too wide a range is superfluous, increases engineering difficulty, and would lead to higher production costs and potentially weaker structures – complete non-starters for us.

The SwitchGrade Pro’s wide-enough tilt range, 5-degree steps, Loc8 indexing, and Climb-it Control consider all these factors and, in our view, ticks off all the boxes.

Design Details That Matter

The SwitchGrade Pro features a more compact, streamlined body with a minimalist profile, aggressive chamfered edges, and optimized material resulting in a lighter assembly with a bling factor that’s guaranteed to turn heads. While function beats out form every time, we pay attention to both with unrelenting detail because, let’s face it, who doesn’t like taking photos of their rigs leaning on things?

In fact, you might be tempted to delay installing the SwitchGrade for weeks just to gawk at it and appreciate it CNC’d craftmanship. Don’t laugh, we’ve had plenty of customers tell us this! We wouldn’t blame you one bit.

The SwitchGrade Pro features a new lever design with a narrower, chamfered end to reduce rail conflict on some saddles without sacrificing leverage. The Pro lever also features an access slot allowing installation on top-loading seatposts commonly found on gravel, road, and bikepacking bikes.

The Pro relies on interchangeable shims and adapters to support a wide range of popular dropper posts and fixed seatposts which helps customers continue using their SwitchGrades even when they swap posts or move onto new bikes.

Some of the finer details that would otherwise be easy to miss but we’re no less proud of include:

  • machined overhangs to hold the cylinder nuts captive for easier installation
  • finely tapped, geometrically aligned holes cut into the base that contribute to the Climb-it Control system
  • angled fastener holes and strategically placed scallops widen compatibility across seatposts with varying posthead dimensions
  • tabbed shims that interface with the base prevent movement to facilitate installation
  • a unique swingarm and rail clamp design that works with both round and oval rails (oval rails sold separately)
  • an open (vs closed) design for easier maintenance. Why? Because nothing destroys bike parts faster than trapped dirt that is hard to reach

And lastly, what you won’t see but will feel instantly, are extremely tight tolerances used throughout the design of the SwitchGrade Pro to prevent unwanted play or creaks.

“We put a lot into the SwitchGrade Pro, staying true to our goal of solving unique problems as simply as possible. Words make it sound easy but it’s anything but, in fact the opposite’s true – the simpler something seems, the harder it was to get there.

This took us 2 years of ideation, design, testing, prototyping, breaking stuff, more testing, and countless iterations and that’s ok by us. Every tiny detail exists for a reason so we could deliver something that our customers asked for.

Hearing directly from our customers keeps the fuel burning. None of this exists without them. The DMs, comments, the encouragement – and the hard questions – are what keep us pushing forward. We take a lot of pride in building cool stuff we want to ride, and we take even more pride in building them with the people who ride them. Your belief in what we’re doing means more than we can gather into words.
