June 9, 2026

Rocky Mountain’s New Altitude Powerplay 3 dropped just as our eMTB Shootout finished shooting, and we were stoked to include it in the mix. In past years, we were thoroughly impressed by the brutal power the Dyname eBike system produced, so we were excited to swing a leg over the Rocky to see how the system stood up to the new wave of motors, and how their new LC2R suspension design would perform.

Could the new Altitude Powerplay 3 offer a compelling option to take on the 14 competitors in our search for the best eMTB on the market in 2026? We were excited to attack the trails of Santa Fe, New Mexico, to find out.

These intensive group reviews would not be possible without some amazing partners. Their support ensures our entire crew can ride all these bikes on a variety of terrain to establish real-world data for our audience.

Fox Racing kept the team warm during the odd storm, comfortable on hot days, and ensured we were always looking cool while staying protected.

Schwalbe Tires provided control tires with amazing and predictable performance, and 2 weeks of testing across the 15 test eMTBs with zero flat tires.

We’d also like to thank our destination hosts. We stayed at Glorieta Adventure Camps just outside Santa Fe, New Mexico and we were supported by Sante Fe City and Santa Fe County and their Tourism Dept. Thanks for the hospitality, and you should definitely get down there for yourself!

ROCKY MOUNTAIN ALTITUDE POWERPLAY 3 SPECS OVERVIEW

The new Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay 3 frame is offered in a choice of Smoothwall carbon fiber or FORM alloy frames, depending on the build spec selected. Built around Rocky Mountain’s own unique Dyname S4 Pro drive unit, the Altitude Powerplay can be configured with either a mixed wheel or 29” setup thanks to wheel size flip chip. The rear end delivers 160mm travel through the LC2R (Low Center Counter Rotating) suspension design, a virtual pivot setup with a pivot concentric to the bottom bracket.

As we have come to expect from Rocky Mountain bikes, the Ride-4 geometry flip chip is in place to offer four options to tune the ride feeling. A reach-adjust headset adds further tuning potential.

DYNAME S4 PRO EBIKE SYSTEM SPECS

The Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay 3 features the Dyname S4 Pro drive unit, developed in-house by Rocky Mountain. This drive unit features a unique design, relying on a standard bottom bracket shell and crank setup, and driving the chain through an idler wheel output on the drive unit above. The mechanical torque sensor is said to reduce the lag that can be present in most eBike systems, giving an impressively reactive output. While this system has its advantages, it produces a mechanical rumble through the pedals that feels a little less refined than the latest generation.

The Dyname S4 Pro drive unit weighs 3.2 kg (7.05 lbs) and produces 1000 W peak power with a maximum 108 Nm torque. Powering the system is the 720 Wh removable battery, and the Overtime Pack range extender can boost this by 330 Wh to deliver a large 1050 Wh total capacity. With the 4A charger, this can be charged in under four hours.

The simple Jumbotron display in the Rocky Mountain’s top tube is customizable, and can be used to tune the ride modes with the 3-button remote on the bars. There is no app available, with Rocky Mountain keen to encourage full focus on the ride.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN ALTITUDE POWERPLAY 3 GEOMETRY

The highly adjustable geometry of the Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay 3 has a neutral position that sits in the middle of the enduro spectrum. The size Large’s 480 mm reach had our 5’10” to 6’2” (178cm to 189cm) crew feeling comfortable.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN ALTITUDE POWERPLAY 3 BUILD OPTIONS

Rocky Mountain offers the new Altitude Powerplay 3 in a choice of three build options, from the A30 to the $10,999 C70, tested. The Altitude Powerplay 3 C70 featured a build spec that struck a happy blend of performance without going into the ultra-premium realm, helping to keep the price down slightly.

A Fox Factory suspension combo with 170mm travel 38 Grip X2 fork and Float X2 rear shock give highly adjustable dampers. A SRAM Eagle 90 T-Type mechanical drivetrain offers dependable shifting, with a RaceFace Aeffect Cinch crank in 165mm length providing drive to the 34T chainring.

SRAM’s Maven Silver brakes offered excellent stopping power, but required the usual piston massaging procedure to obtain dependable performance. A Rocky Mountain stem holds a RaceFace Turbine R bar, and a OneUp V3 dropper in generous lengths (210 mm on large) holds a WTB Solano saddle.

Rounding out the specs, a DT Swiss HF1900 wheelset comes fitted with Cushcore tire inserts as standard, and is wrapped in a set of Maxxis Double Down tires with the Assegai and DHR II. As with all of the bikes in our 2026 eMTB Shootout, these tires were replaced with a Schwalbe Tacky Chan Gravity Pro and Magic Mary Gravity Pro tire combination, giving a consistent and dependable platform across test bikes.

The Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay 3 C70 in size large weighed 55.3 lbs (25 kg) with our Schwalbe control tires.

DYNAME S4 PRO DRIVE UNIT PERFORMANCE

  • Pure Power: Our testers all enjoyed the power and especially the low end grunt the Dyname S4 Pro unit delivers. There is no shortage of juice when you really put the power down to the pedals, and there’s something special about how Rocky gets the 108Nm and 1,000W to feel so capable. This thing just tractors up anything!
  • Control: Tuning parameters limited, however riders can modify the key aspects of the drive unit’s feel and performance. As far as control and power delivery on the trail, this system is one of the best for technical climbs, providing near-instantaneous engagement with solid ground clawing capabilities.
  • Perceived Efficiency: Dyname S4 Pro is not an outlier from our ride experience, however a well lubricated chain does make a difference in the smoothness and sound of the drivetrain more than most. Like all of these more powerful drive units, power tuning and rider effort will have bigger variables on range and efficiency.
  • Noise Up and down: The sound of the Dyname S4 Pro is unique. It’s a bit less of an electronic whir than some others, and slightly more like the sound of gears moving and chain spinning. As mentioned above, good chain lube help to keep it running smoother.
  • Ecosystem: Basic and to the point. It works, and it forces riders to focus more on the ride and less on apps and electronics. That’s not a bad thing in our books!

ROCKY MOUNTAIN ALTITUDE POWERPLAY 3 CLIMBING PERFORMANCE

The entire team agreed this was one of the smoothest and most unique feeling bikes to climb. No doubt the drive unit has a big roll in the uniqueness, but what really stands out is the smoothness of the suspension. It wasn’t always everyone’s favorite, as one rider thought it was a bit mushy, but most of our crew liked the added traction and capabilities of this bike on the way up.

Unless you really ramp up the tuning, one of the features about the climbing our crew liked most was the slightly more conscious pedaling effort it rewarded. The harder you pedal, the more it ramps up the support, with a more direct relationship than most systems. We liked this as it would allow us to get a more natural ride feel if we didn’t want to push hard and cruise. But, if we wanted to put some torque into the pedals, it met us with more support and inspired us to just keep pushing until the legs or heart said it was time to ease off. If that’s not for you, you can simply tune the drive unit to be a bit more engaged and get that soft-pedaling assist on recovery days.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN ALTITUDE POWERPLAY 3 DESCENDING PERFORMANCE

The Altitude Powerplay 3 offers equally unique performance on the way down the mountain. Compared to some other longer travel bikes in this year’s shootout, the Rocky Altitude has a lower stack height. This could be a polarizing point for some, but the front end grip, cornering traction and inspired feel it deliver are undeniable. When it came time to attacking corners and trails that had quick back to back turns, our crew regularly applauded the Altitude’s capabilities. If you’re a rider who loves leaning a bike over, dipping it into turns and quick transitions from left to right, this is likely an eMTB that you’ll have a bunch of fun on.

Another big standout of the Altitude Powerplay 3 is the ground-tracing feel of the rear suspension. Rocky have masterfully controlled the rear wheel’s movement, as it absorbs impacts with ease and keeps the rider moving forward with minimal disruption. The plushness is a real bonus to riders who prioritize a comfortable and planted feeling bike. Similarly, riders who are seeking added confidence by having a bike that minimizes that chatter beneath them will enjoy the confidence to stay off the brakes longer aboard the Altitude Powerplay 3.

It can be tough for bikes with a soft and supple rear suspension platform to remain lively and poppy, but the Rocky Mountain does a good job. The Altitude Powerplay 3 is certainly not a slopestyle bike, but with a sag number closer to 30%, you’ll still have plenty to push off of for those natural gaps and jibby moves on the trail. If however, you are the ultimate play rider and live for flow trails, jumps and styling out your big airs, this wouldn’t be the top bike in our list of recommendations.

HOW DID IT COMPARE?

The Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay 3 is a well-rounded competitor in this year’s eMTB Shootout. It has a rear suspension feel that’s closer to the plush Forbidden Dreadnought than most, which can be a very good thing depending on the rider. It’s a bit more lively and playful than the ultra-plush Cannondale Moterra, but not quite as sporty and poppy as the Pivot Shuttle LT or Mondraker Zendit. It rides a bit like the Propain Ekano, but with a slightly more grounded feel.

The Wolf’s Last Word

While some riders were more excited to ride the Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay 3 than others, all riders had to give the bike its props. The rear suspension performance and its ability to erase the chatter and provide a smooth and composed ride is impressive to say the least. While other aspects such as the motor and electronics, looks, and geometry, may have raised talking points at the Round Table, we all agreed that this bike is a worthy candidate for a lot of riders to consider in their quest to find a solid, enduro-ready eMTB. We like this bike quite a bit, and hope to see more of them out on the trails.

WHO SHOULD BUY THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN ALTITUDE POWERPLAY 3?

Riders who want something unique and different. Someone who is looking for a torquey, low-end power monster that will reward their efforts as they want to mash the pedals and climb steep, technical terrain, or cruise up a fire road in comfort. It’s also a great bike for riders who love a very active and bump-eating suspension package that floats over terrain.
