eMTB Round Up
The Best from Sea Otter
Scott E-Spark 710
Scott had this stealth, all black E-Spark 710 in their booth and we couldn’t resist a photo or two. Despite its low key looks, this bad ass bike beckoned us over. It’s got a loaded build sporting Fox suspension and a Shimano XT 11 speed drivetrain. The frame has 120mm of travel out back with a FOX Nude EVOL shock. Up front the E-Spark has 130mm of travel and a FOX 34 Float Performance Elite fork. Power comes from a Shimano E-8000 internal down tube battery. The motor puts out 250W with an integrated 500Wh Battery.
Kona Remote CTRL
After launching the Remote, a hard tail eMTB targeted at trail builders and explorers, Kona is taking the next step. This year at Sea Otter they showed off this prototype of the Remote CTRL, a new dual suspension machine with some aggressive geo and typical Kona flare. According to the Kona staff however, we’ll be seeing a production version of this rig as soon as this summer. The bike rolls on 27.5 wheels and borrows geo cues from the Process line. The Remote CTRL has 150mm of travel up front and 135mm out back. Bosch provides the oomph with a mid-drive motor and downtube battery. Price and final spec are still TBD.
Commencal Meta Power 29
Our Commencal Meta Power 27.5 test rig already impressed us as a capable rig, but adding 29″ wheels would take it to the next level. That’s exactly what Commencal did, dropping the Meta Power 29. It has the reliable Shimano E8000 motor and E8010, 500 Wh. battery. The Meta Power 29 has 150mm of travel up front and 140mm in the rear. Both come with RockShox damping. This is one bike we’re very excited to throw a leg over!
Focus JAM² and SAM²
New to the dual suspension eMTB game, Focus dropped some serious fire with their first two bikes, the JAM² and the SAM². The JAM² is offered in both a 27.5+ and a 29 wheel configuration. The SAM² is their enduro rig and comes with 27.5 wheels. If all mountain and trail riding is your thing, the 140mm JAM² is going to be your ride. If longer travel and hard charging are more your style, the 170mm SAM² will better fit your needs. Both come with the same Shimano Steps E8000, 70 Nm, 250 W motor. Focus uses something they coined T.E.C. or Tailored Energy Concept, which puts smaller batteries in the down tube, but lets you add an additional pack for a total of 756 WH. That smaller integrated battery lets Focus keep the weight of both bikes to the low 40’s.
Mondraker e-Crafty R+
Long, slack and boasting Mondraker’s forward geometry, this 140mm rig is ready for a flogging. Inside is a Bosch Performance Line CX motor and Purion computer. Power storage comes courtesy of a Intube PowerTube 500Wh Bosch battery. Sram handles the rest of the spec, with a GX drivetrain and a RockShox Superdeluxe R Debonair rear shock. Up front is a RockShox Yari 27.5” RC 160mm fork.
Felt Prototype
One of the better looking eMTB’s we saw at the show was Felt’s new preproduction machine. The bike is built on a 27.5+ platform with a Shimano Steps E8000 motor. Suspension on the Sea Otter show bike came courtesy of RockShox. One might notice that the battery pack is missing the downtube cover. The bike is so new that Felt didn’t have time to get the finished cover before the big show. We’re looking forward to seeing the final production bike and spec when it does launch!
Pivot Shuttle
Our first ride aboard this rig was more than enough to convince us that it’s something special. With140mm rear travel and 150mm front, it’s a bike that isn’t afraid to get rowdy. The shredder also packs sub-437mm short chainstays making it a cinch to flick and whip around corners. It rolls on 27.5 wheels and is powered by a Shimano Steps E8000 eMTB motor and 500Wh battery pack. Oh yeah, it only weighs 44lbs too. Check out our first ride impressions here.
