KOROYD first made waves with their thermally welded tubes of Co-polymer, often found in premium mountain bike helmets as a high-performance alternative to EPS foam. These tested incredibly well, and have been adopted in a number of fields in and outside of sports and recreation. While we may have been guilty of also commenting that they looked like straws glued together, these KOROYD-equipped helmets have won awards, saved a couple of friends from serious head injury and KOROYD’s technology is now something that many people trust their life with.

Looking to expand on their range of offerings and put their science-backed lab to work, KOROYD have recently launched a robust line of body protection, which we’ll be diving into for this Tech Check feature.

WHY BODY PROTECTORS?

While KOROYD acknowledges that there’s plenty of brands out there that can make inserts that will slide into a sleeve and offer Level 1 or 2 protection, they believed their knowledge and capabilities would allow them to create something a bit different. Or as they told me, “better.”

What is better? Well, primarily they were focused on comfort, breathability, weight and consistency of performance across a wide temperature range. It really feels as if they have nailed that brief with Fox’s Enduro Pro knee guards.

KOROYD has a background in aerospace safety research, which has evolved into action sports, industrial, motorsports and beyond. They’ve taken their experience in energy and impact absorption and applied it to “engineer extraordinary protective solutions for all of life’s adventures”, as they state.

WHAT MAKES KOROYD’S PROTECTION AND GUARDS DIFFERENT?

First off, unlike many other rate-sensitive systems, hardening polymers or foam pads, KOROYD uses a custom TPE elastomer, which performs consistently across a wide range of temperatures. The open-cell, auxetic structure disperses impact energy efficiently, reducing the volume required to achieve the same protection levels.

KOROYD’s open and breathable design offers several benefits to the wearer from a comfort perspective. There is undeniable breathability and airflow, and unhindered maneuverability thanks to the product’s ability to conform around the body. Unlike other sheets of protective material, these pads do not absorb as much body heat and trap warmth in the material, reducing the sweat and discomfort produced.

WHAT ARMOR OPTIONS DOES KOROYD OFFER?

As a materials and ingredients company, KOROYD are not in the market of making or selling finalized pads to consumers, rather they are in the market of collaborating with brands to offer solutions they both believe will produce well-received products for their audience.

As of right now, KOROYD offers inserts for knee, elbow, chest and back protectors that can be designed to fit into other brand’s soft goods. For example, the Fox Enduro Pro knee guards were the first KOROYD-equipped knee pads on the market, and they’ve already received plenty of good reviews from our crew, other media outlets and happy customers alike.

KOROYD BODY PROTECTION FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Over the years, The Loam Wolf team has spent countless hours in Koroyd-equipped helmets, trusting in them to protect us should we put our head to the dirt. Now we’ve spent over six months on-trail with the new Koroyd-equipped Fox Enduro Pro knee pads, and it’s safe to say our crew has placed serious trust in Koroyd’s engineering to keep our knees safe too.

While Fox’s design team undoubtedly knocked it out of the park with their dual-sleeve design on the Enduro Pro knee pads, we’ve also been very impressed by the Koroyd insert contained within.

The flexibility is second-to-none for a pad with the protection level it offers. Comparably the Enduro Pro is lightweight, flexible, and the airflow is notable. Most importantly, when we’ve put our knee to the ground, the protective capabilities have met or exceeded expectations for a Level 1 protector so far, too.

Based on our experience with Fox’s Koroyd-equipped pads so far, we’re certain that we’ll be seeing plenty more neon-green inside guards and protectors out on the trail, as these knee pads immediately shot up to the top of our all-time trail knee pad list.
