PINND E-BIKE CRANKS REVIEW

SHORT, STOUT AND SEXY

As eBike bottom bracket heights continue to drop, clearance on technical climbs suffers further. Thankfully, the eMTB market is realizing the possibilities offered by shorter cranks, which not only increase ground clearance but can offer improvements to comfort when pedaling at the higher cadences favored by eBike motors.

We’ve been putting the Bosch e-Bike Crank by PINND to the test on our long-term Orbea Wild H10 test eMTB to see how the 155mm crank length performed. It’s safe to say we’re big fans.

ABOUT THE PINND E-BIKE CRANKS

PINND manufactures their eBike Cranks from 7075 T651 aluminium in their Scottish facility. These Cat 4 rated E-Bike Enduro cranks are offered with fitment for most common eBike systems. We tested their ISIS spline interface cranks, which are optimized for Bosch Performance Line CX Gen 5; Bosch SX or Brose drive units. They will fit other systems, but may not offer the ideal Q-Factor.

Offered in lengths 145mm, 155mm and 165mm, PINND hopes to increase ground clearance to improve technical climbing ability on eBikes. Short cranks come with the benefit of easier high-cadence pedaling, as well as a tighter and more stable descending position for your feet. The PINND eMTB Cranks use a self-extracting design to facilitate easier removal, with the bolt and captive nut offered in a wide range of anodized colors.

These PINND crank arms are offered in a choice of Black or “natural” (silver) anodized colors. The 155mm cranks tested weighed in at 469g with hardware, and retailed for £170 for the pair.

THE DIRT

Short cranks are all the rage, especially in the eBike space, yet there’s not all that many aftermarket options out there. I was excited to find out if 155mm cranks could boost the performance of my Orbea Wild long term tester to new heights, and local company PINND’s machined alloy shorties looked like the ticket to help me find out.

PINND didn’t go crazy with the design of their crank, opting to give a clean and elegant crank with just enough aggression to satisfy most tastes. I opted to test the black colorway, but having seen the natural silver anodized finish in the flesh, it’s a tough call as to which looks better.

It was a pleasure to replace the stock cranks on my Orbea with these PINND eBike Cranks. The craftsmanship was evident as soon as I opened the box, with their £170 price tag immediately feeling quite reasonable. Mounting them up onto the Bosch Performance Line CX Gen 5 drive unit was smooth and easy, and I was ready to hit the trails with these short alloy eBike cranks in no time.

As you would expect, ground clearance was boosted by the shorter crank length. As a result, I was able to run a touch more sag on the rear of the Orbea Wild H10 without running into issues with pedal striking. This increased sag delivered a more deeply-sunk riding stance, offering improved comfort and confidence on the rough and gnarly local descents. In addition, the tighter foot stance gave a more solid descending position. The improved descending prowess was the more notable improvement to the performance than the climbing in the end!

Of course, with a 5mm shorter crank, my saddle also had to rise 5mm to retain the same leg extension at the bottom of my pedal stroke. Countering this was a couple millimetres more sag, which evened things out and ultimately avoided any notable shift to my center of gravity.

Without the tool for the self-extracting bolts, I lost one of the captive nuts early on. As soon as I got a replacement and the proprietary tool, I suffered no more issues. Otherwise, through plenty of heavy landings, the PINND eBike crank has performed silently, and continues to look excellent mounted at the center of the Bosch drive unit.

The Wolf’s Last Word

If you’re in the market for a short crank for your eMTB, I can highly recommend PINND’s Scottish-made cranks. Looking sleek, improving ground clearance and feeling notably stout, these eBike cranks are sure to please eBikers in the market.
