ABOUT THE SDG OPEN CORE THRICE GRIPS
SDG’s Open Core Thrice grips are designed to help riders with hand fatigue. At 135mm long and with a 32mm maximum diameter, they stayed within a size that doesn’t feel too chunky nor too small under hand.
They use a soft 20A durometer outer layer, offering excellent grip and comfort. With the soft rubber and SDG’s Open Core cutout at the palm, these grips are meant to keep your hands vibration free and comfortable during long sustained downhills.
A tapered inner core tightens onto the bar as they are installed, with a single 3mm allen lockring that helps secure the grip from slipping or rotating.
Their Ramped and Undercut grabbers are molded underneath for rotational control and are shaped to fingers for excellent grip. Moving to the Flared Outer Ends, they’ve decided to create a large soft taper at the end to help prevent hand blow off and offer leverage control for cornering and pushing at the end of the bars.

THE DIRT
As a washed up old bmx rider and a self-proclaimed grip snob, I’m always looking for something I want to both ride on my own bike and sell at the shop. When I first locked eyes on the SDG Open Core Thrice grip, I knew that this ribbed rubber touch point was special.
Installation was easy: with a 3mm allen key and tweaked placement of the ovalized shape, these purple monsters were ready to rip. The left and right-specific clamps were a nice small detail that is always appreciated for an aftermarket grip. Caressing my gloveless, calloused hands across this amalgamation of rubber, metal and plastic, I instantly noticed how comfortable these grips actually are. They have a great ovalized shape that fits my hands well, which gave me control and comfort no matter what terrain I was riding in.
Whether I was riding 1,001 laps at the local DH zone or my 2.5 mile technical short track trail at home, my hands felt great both with gloves and without. They never felt like I had to worry about grip, even if I was sweating profusely from the hot desert heat. Between the finger grabbers and the tapered end, my hands never once rattled off of the bar, and always felt great in my palm on sustained climbs and full day rides. The only downside I came across is that they do seem to wear fast. But since most of you have soft computer hands, the comfort and grip you get should be well worth spending $32.99 on.
Grip designs and technology are a dime a dozen these days, but I feel like SDG came up with something that stands out ever so slightly, above a lot of other designs. I’ve wired non lock-on grips for years trying to get every bit of rubber damping possible, but having a grip that feels similar and yet can be removed without unwiring is something I can get behind.

Pushing boundaries in the grip space is what SDG seems to be all about with their new Open Core Technology on the Thrice Grip. They’re ribbed for your pleasure, offer great ergonomics, and help a ton with hand fatigue.
SDG’s new Open Core Thrice Grips aren’t just an overly extended name, they’re well designed and are a great addition to SDG’s grip lineup. Of course, grips are one of those things that come down to personal preference; there’s no one-size-fits-all option. With that said, I really liked these and will be recommending them to customers in my shop.
