FOX SPEEDFRAME RS & SPEEDFRAME PRO REVIEW

STILL MY FAVORITE HELMET?

Review by Drew Rohde

March 6, 2025

For the last few years, the Fox Speedframe helmet has been my favorite open-face mountain bike helmet. Now for 2025, Fox has redesigned the Speedframe helmet to not only make it the safest mountain bike helmet ever tested by Virginia Tech but to also address some of the critical points consumers and athletes wanted to see improved. Namely improving the visor and adding integrated eyewear storage. With all those things accomplished, let’s see how the new 2025 Fox Speedframe helmet performs and if it will take the place as my new favorite MTB helmet.

If you’d like to really nerd out on all the tech, details and see us smash one of these helmets in a lab, check out the Dissected Feature we made at Revelyst/ Fox HQ a couple months back.

At the time of publication, the Speedframe RS is the #1 safest tested by Virginia Tech, with the Speedframe Pro being close behind as the #2 safest MTB helmet they’ve ever tested. Both of the helmets receive the VA Tech 5 Star rating.

SAFETY AND COMFORT FEATURES OF THE FOX SPEEDFRAME

Speedframe RS features MIPS Integra Split technology, a standout for open-face mountain bike helmets. The RS also features a BOA Fit System for easy adjustability of fit, a 3-position one-hand adjustable visor , Ionic+ moisture wicking line and FIDLOCK magnetic buckle. This helmet also meets the NTA-8776 eBike Standard, which means it’s designed for higher speed impacts that are tested for to achieve this eBike certification.

Speedframe Pro utilizes MIPS Air Node technology, which gives a much slimmer, connected feel. It also uses a BOA Fit System, the same visor, integrated sungless holder and FIDLOCK buckle system. It uses a removable washable liner which has the MIPS low friction layer on it.

The Wolf’s Last Word

For this long-term review, we’ve only had the Speedframe RS and Pro models, so my feedback will be based on those two models and how they compare to each other and the predecessor. In short, I absolutely love the Speedframe Pro. It is unbelievably slim, light and breathable. The fit, look and overall experience while wearing it is nearly perfect. My one complaint is that I can see the somewhat flimsy visor flex when i have a GoPro 13 (heavy) mounted. I don’t notice it in the footage, which is more important, but it’s something I notice while riding. I am sure the flexible visor is a safety feature to help reduce the risk of neck injury but, still, I wanted to mention it.

The Speedframe RS is a very solid helmet all around and I love knowing that I have the safest tested open-face helmet on whenever I’m wearing it. The thicker pads and MIPS Integra Split mean it doesn’t quite have the same “attached” feel as the Pro. But, that is a sacrifice many will likely be willing to make for the slight increase in safety and reduction of energy transmission to the wearer during a crash. The thicker pads do a better job absorbing sweat than the thin Air Node pads, and there’s a small but notable air flow change between the two models.

I genuinely have a hard time making a decision between the two helmets if I have to choose one. While I love the added safety of the RS, the reality is I now spend most all of my time riding in a ProFrame RS. So, if I’m not riding in my ProFrame RS, chances are I’m riding slower, mellower trails and would feel plenty safe in a 5 Star rated helmet that’s just behind the Speedframe RS but feels a little bit better on my head. If I wasn’t a full face rider and always wore an open-face helmet, then I’d possibly lean towards the Speedframe RS as my go-to trail helmet. Ultimately, I like them both and I’m more than happy in either one. I would likely pick the day’s helmet based on my outfit and ambient temperature more than anything else. They’re both that good.
