LEZYNE DIGITAL PRESSURE OVER DRIVE TRACK PUMP REVIEW

A quality tire pump is somewhat of a must-have for a passionate mountain biker. For those running their mountain bike tires tubeless, a standard track pump is often not adequate to get the beads to seat in place. As such, many brands have a pump with a tubeless “booster” chamber that can release a burst of air and push the tire bead into place. Lezyne’s premium Digital Pressure Over Drive pump hopes to offer cyclists with the best tool for the job, but does it live up to its inflated price tag? I was excited to find out.

ABOUT THE LEZYNE DIGITAL PRESSURE OVER DRIVE

The Lezyne Digital Pressure Over Drive is a floor pump designed with seating stubborn tubeless tires in mind. It has a twin-chamber design, with the secondary chamber acting as the tubeless inflator. In charge mode, the chamber can be pumped up to pressure (maximum 220psi/15.2bar) before releasing its air into the tire in one continuous burst, quickly and easily seating the tire bead.

The pump has a durable steel and aluminum construction, with a quality wooden handle. A digital pressure gauge reads out tire pressure to the nearest whole psi. At the end of the long, nylon-reinforced braided hose sits Lezyne’s ABS-1 Pro Tubeless chuck, which is Presta and M6x0.8 (the size of a Presta valve stem) compatible. The chuck has an integrated valve core tool, so you can easily remove the core and use the M6x0.8 for extra airflow. There’s also a bleed button for making adjustments to your final tire pressure.

THE DIRT

I find myself changing a whole lot of tubeless tires in the day-to-day of my life as a mountain bike tester. As a result, a good track pump with inbuilt tubeless inflator is a valuable asset in my workshop to reduce the effort required to get the tires seated and ready to hit the trails. I had hoped that Lezyne’s premium track pump offering would be the ticket to tackle such tasks, and while it does the inflation part well, it had a number of quirks that were frustrating.

Thread-on chucks are great at staying in place and ensuring a solid connection to the valve. However, I won’t be alone in having experienced the hardships of inflating a tire only to have the valve core unthread when removing the chuck. After this happened a couple of times, I learned to cinch down the valve core nice and tight before connecting the pump, but even so I managed to lose the core a couple more times over the following months. It was appreciated to have the valve core tool built into the chuck – clearly this is an issue Lezyne had anticipated.

Another quirk of the Digital Pressure Overdrive was its effects on pumping and pressure readout. I found that I had to exceed the pressure inside the tire by a considerable amount before there was enough pressure in the system to depress the Presta valve and allow air to flow. This required a good number of pumps to fill the large volume of the inflation chamber and hose. For quick pressure validation and top-ups, this was frustrating. Related to this issue was the delayed reaction of the pressure gauge, which would take around 10 seconds to stabilize to a readout of the pressure, and left me wondering if there was still another psi or two to drop.

These quirks aside, the Lezyne Digital Pressure Over Drive is a quality track pump without a doubt. That said, elements like the flimsy metal lever at the bottom for controlling the tubeless inflation do make me question its near 200 dollar or pound price tag. So far, it’s proven to retain the same quality inflation feeling as day one, but I simply can’t say that it’s worth that sky-high price tag due to those quirks.

The Wolf’s Last Word

A quality mountain bike pump with some problematic quirks and a high price tag, the Lezyne Digital Pressure Over Drive does its job fairly well, but left me frustrated and disappointed frequently.
