Patagonia entered the mountain bike space nearly a decade ago with fundamental apparel pieces — shorts, a shirt, and a jacket. Since then, the brand has expanded into all aspects of mountain bike apparel, including pants, jackets, and hip packs, with branding such as “Dirt Craft” and “Dirt Roamer.”

Within their lineup is the Dirt Roamer 3L Hip Pack, which I have been testing for the past several months. Through mountain bike rides in the dirt (its namesake says it all), rain and snow, the Dirt Roamer pack has been with me on nearly every ride. Read on to see how it performed.

ABOUT THE PATAGONIA DIRT ROAMER 3L HIP PACK

The Patagonia Dirt Roamer 3L Hip Pack is designed to be a solid choice for quick summertime adventures. Made from durable 100% recycled nylon material, the pack has a three-liter volume, as the name suggests. For a bit of extra carrying capacity, two external straps are stowed at the bottom of the pack, perfect for strapping extras to the pack like a jacket.

Along with its three-liter capacity, the Dirt Roamer 3L Hip Pack also has pouches for two water bottles on each hip. Two smaller zippered pockets on the belt are perfect for storing keys or snacks. The hip pack itself has one large zippered compartment with two smaller organizational pouches inside. On the very front of the pack is one more zippered pocket roughly the size of a phone.

Patagonia uses its breathable Regulator® airmesh for every contact point on the Dirt Roamer 3L Hip Pack. The pack’s strap is constructed of standard webbing and has a standard buckle offset to the left hip.

All told, the pack weighs 244 grams.

THE DIRT

I’m a fan of dual water bottle pouches on smaller hip packs. It seems like smaller volume hip packs — 3L or less — often have only one bottle pouch. This typically leaves me asking why, especially if there is room for a second bottle pouch. I would appreciate the option to carry multiple bottles! For this, I say ‘thank you, Patagonia.’

Along with the ability to carry two bottles, I also appreciated the two zipper pockets located on both hips. Again, quite a few packs have one zipper pocket on the waist belt, which is where I typically store my keys. The second was crucial for snack storage, making it possible to grab a bite without having to remove the hip pack. You could store a multi tool here for quick access on the trails.

Overall I found that the pack was comfortable, even on longer rides. However, that comfort took a while to find initially. I found myself having to cinch the main strap tighter than I expected on each ride, typically making multiple stops to continue tightening until it was just right. Once I found the proper adjustment, the pack was great. Before then, there was quite a bit of movement.

The Dirt Roamer 3L Hip Pack also sits a bit lower than other hip packs — lower than my preference. While this wasn’t necessarily a deal breaker for me, it was something I had to adjust to.

The Regulator® airmesh helped make the Dirt Roamer one of the most breathable hip packs I’ve tested. That said, it wasn’t the most weather-resistant pack. While no items inside the hip pack were ever soaked, moisture certainly got in during rainy rides or splashing through puddles. That said, nowhere does Patagonia boast the Dirt Roamer as incredibly weather-resistant.

With that in mind, this makes an excellent summer hip pack, especially considering its limited three-liter capacity. The reality is, the pack fills pretty quickly, and likely won’t be the best for huge adventures where you’re carrying a lot of gear. However, with the stowable exterior straps, this little pack proved capable of holding more than I thought.

Its small stature also made it easy to roll up and put in a bag, making it the perfect hip pack to travel with.

The Wolf’s Last Word

While the Patagonia Dirt Roamer 3L Hip Pack wasn’t as water-resistant and took some adjustment, it made for a solid fair-weather option. With more storage than I anticipated and dual bottle holders, this will definitely be the hip pack I take with me while traveling this summer.

ABOUT THE WOLF

The local boy — Travis was born and raised in Bend, OR. Skateboarding consumed his life until his high school years (yes, he can still kickflip), but was replaced by mountain biking…then rock climbing, whitewater rafting, and finally back to mountain biking. After a stint in the big city, Travis returned home, trading a teaching career to be an okay mountain biker and above-average journalist. He is an outspoken 90s grunge fan, cornering poor souls in conversations about the meaning behind the lyrics of Alice In Chains’ “Would.” Most days, Travis hopes to be outside, whether that is on an early morning ride or a hike with his family (the best days include both).
