ABOUT THE RNDM OUTLINE GOGGLE
For their first goggle, RNDM opted to go down the premium Injection Molded lens route, offering some solid quality optics and good durability to stand up to abuse on the trail. The lenses are held in by the Fix Switch system, which makes for easy release of the lenses yet has held them in solidly throughout testing.
The Outline frame is padded by a 20mm thick, three-layer foam to offer cushion against the face, with a thin cloth layer to promote sweat absorption. The top vent is fully covered with foam, whereas the sides and bottom have perforations to allow for better airflow and thus reduce fogging. The strap is given anti-slip rubber on the inside, helping them to stay put on the helmet through large compressions.
The RNDM Outline goggles are supplied with both a clear lens and a dark tinted lens with 10.5% VLT. Replacement lenses can be purchased for CAD$35 (Approx $25USD), or you can sign up for the Lens Replacement program for CAD$75 (Approx $54USD), which entitles you to up to five replacement lenses per year, keeping your vision clear.
A soft goggle bag is provided to keep the goggles safe in between uses. They can be purchased in a choice of white or black colorways, for a retail price of CAD$120 (approx $86USD).
THE DIRT
Between a couple of days in Whistler bike park and a week in the French Alps, I’ve trusted the RNDM Outline goggles to keep my eyes safe for countless laps at the beginning of this season. Sadly though, my time spent basking in the sunshine has been limited, with wet and gray weather seemingly following me around the world. Is the world perhaps trying to make me feel like I’m in my Scottish home? It sure feels like it, and it means that the days that I’ve been able to wear the tinted lens have amounted to just one so far. It’s quite a dark tint, but fairly neutral in its color profile and very much usable if you’re in the open on a bright day.
Focusing on the clear lens, performance has been stellar so far. Optics are solid, avoiding any distortion or magnification. They’ve resisted scratching fairly well through repeated branch hits and mud splatters, only beginning to show some signs of scratching now. The field of view is good – not the largest because they sit slightly further from your face than some – but very much satisfactory for my needs. Ventilation is solid, and so they’ve only fogged up a couple of times during some seriously “muggy”, humid days. The face foam is comfortable, without holding too much sweat to the point that they’re cold when they go back on. And the rubber coating on the strap ensures they have stayed put without issue throughout my rides. The strap could benefit from being slightly wider to fill the channel on some helmets, but sits well on most regardless.
Overall, the impressions are of a quality goggle, which is great to see for their fairly reasonable $86-ish price tag. It’s a chunk cheaper than most premium goggles these days, so if these RNDM Outline goggles appeal to you, then they’re a solid choice.
The Wolf’s Last Word
RNDM has hit the market with a very solid offering in their Outline goggle. They look sleek and perform amicably…and it’s always nice to feel like you’re giving back to some of the legends of the sport for their service.
