Topeak’s Torq Stick Pro Digital Tool Kit aims to be the complete solution for the home mechanic, as well as serving duty for the shop pro who wants one compact kit that covers nearly every common bolt on the bike. After several months of use in multiple race events, long strenuous days in the shop, and the occasional parking lot tweak, here is how Topeak’s portable digital torque wrench stacked up.

ABOUT THE TORQ STICK PRO DIGITAL

The Torq Stick Pro Digital is Topeak’s upgraded, full kit version of their popular Torq Stick. At the heart is a slim, high-end digital torque wrench with a reversible ratcheting head. The measuring range of 1–20 Nm covers the vast majority of cockpit, rotor, seatpost, bottle cage, and accessory bolts you might find on modern performance bikes. It has a digital backlit display, as well as an audible beep and vibration alert when achieving the proper torque.

The Pro kit steps things up with a complete set of 18 knurled S2 steel bits, a separate reversible ratchet tool (which doesn’t measure torque), a magnetic Speed Sleeve for fast spinning, and a Finger Bit Holder that shines in confined spaces. Everything packs into a compact hard case with flip-up organizers. Accuracy is rated ±3% and it comes with a calibration certificate; Topeak recommends recalibration after 5,000 cycles.

At $279.95, the Topeak Torq Stick Pro Digital is a notable investment, but one that serious home mechanics and shop mechanics alike are likely to benefit from.

THE DIRT

I see it quite often: some bragadocious home wrencher, or even a high brow “Pro Mechanic”, flaunts how they don’t need a torque wrench. Ham fisting stem faceplate bolts to a nice carbon bar is a guaranteed way to scorpion grind your face across the heavy-duty landing pad, but some refuse to listen.

If you regularly wrench on modern mountain bikes or any other performance-oriented bike, a decent torque wrench is no longer an optional item in the tool kit: it’s mandatory. Over-tightening carbon bits or under-tightening critical bolts is an easy way to create expensive and dangerous problems, but a dependable torque wrench is an easy fix.

That being said, when I first acquired this tool kit, I confidently and happily strolled into my work space and instantly boasted to my fellow mechanic how cool this new Torq Stick Kit was. After briefly locking eyes, he pulled out none other than the exact same kit from his box. It was a standoff. This was the exact moment that I knew, this long, hard, black case was something to behold.

From then on, I proceeded to incorporate it into my Park Tool BX-3 toolbox. Finding a space in this overly crowded and meticulously fine-tuned custom tool setup was a no brainer when I realized how many tools it could replace.

Almost daily, I found myself setting this tool kit out onto my workbench as I open up for a long day of working on jalopies and modern mountain mopeds. I found myself grabbing the box often as I meandered my way around the shop, solving everyone’s cockpit and saddle problems, one beep at a time.

The usability of the small ratchet is second to none. Tightening and getting into the hard-to-reach water bottle bolts on an extra small frame is no problem for this thing. I no longer “cheese ball” my way into victory using the ball end of my Wera wrenches.

The torque wrench itself is a nice size and easy to use. I do seem to fumble a tad with setting the torque, but it is very simple to do as soon as you actually read the instructions.

As I’m setting torque on some overly designed wedge style seatpost clamp, I am delighted to hear the beeping of the torq stick that indicates I’m getting close to torque, until an explosive vibration in my hand indicates not to go any further.

I’m here to torque the world now thanks to this well-designed system that Topeak has managed to create. Even if I did have to do unspeakable things to afford it.

The Wolf’s Last Word

As a mechanic in a prominent shop, I am always trying different tools to fine-tune my craft, and I feel like Topeak hit the nail on the head with this one. For this all-in-one torque and ratchet kit to incorporate so easily into my toolbox, immediately, is no small feat. Whether I’m at a race, in the shop or on a road trip, I find myself grabbing Topeak’s Torq Stick Pro Digital all in one tool kit more than just about anything else.
