ABOUT THE POC HIP PACK HYDRO 4L
POC is a Swedish brand with a reputation for pushing the boundaries of protection and design in both cycling and snow sports. Best known for their helmets and body armor, they’ve applied that same obsessive attention to detail to their pack lineup.
The Hip Pack Hydro 4L is their trail-focused hydration hip pack. It’s built almost entirely from recycled waterproof materials, and features waterproof zips throughout, so your kit stays dry whether the weather turns on you or the trail gets muddy. At 4L total capacity with a dedicated 1.5L hydration bladder compartment, it’s designed to cover everything from a quick after-work shred to a full day in the mountains.
POC considered the details throughout. VPD (ViscoElastic Polymer Dough) padding is used on the back panel to protect you from your own belongings in a crash. This is the same material POC uses on its body and limb protectors, and is great to see used here. There are longer zip pulls for gloved hands, and internal tool sleeves to keep your kit organized. Convertible side pockets can be absorbed into the main compartment for shorter rides, and the pack can be configured as a bar bag for gravel adventures. The compression straps also do double duty as knee pad holsters on long climbs.
At $190, the POC Hip Pack Hydro 4L is priced at the premium end of the hip pack market, but the feature set and material quality reflect that positioning.
THE DIRT
After two months of riding the POC Hip Pack Hydro 4L on the trails around Napa, CA, here’s where things landed.
Coming into this review I wasn’t starting from scratch. I’ve been running a non-hydration hip pack for years, so I’m already a convert to the waist pack life. Hip packs have become my go-to carry solution for most of my rides. I don’t like stuff in my pockets, and a full backpack is a hot, sweaty mess I’d rather avoid. The POC Hydro slots right into that routine with a level of adjustability that translates directly to comfort on the bike.
The build quality is exactly what you’d expect from a premier brand like POC: great materials, thoughtful construction, and nothing that feels like it was included just to hit a feature checklist.
The versatility is where this pack genuinely shines. Pull the bladder out for shorter rides where a bottle in your cage is all you need, and the pack practically disappears. You can forget you have it on at times! Drop the 1.5L bladder back in for a big day out, and you’ve got a capable hydration setup ready for whatever the trail throws at you. It even converts to a handlebar bag with the included straps, a genuinely useful option for gravel days or when you want the weight off your body entirely.
Now, let’s talk about that water weight. A fully loaded 1.5L bladder tips the scales at 3 pounds 5 ounces before you’ve added a single tool, snack, or spare layer. You’re going to feel it. To POC’s credit, the exterior compression straps do a solid job of cinching that load tight to your body and keeping it from flopping around. Does it bounce? Yes, when fully loaded and you’re hitting big up and down moments like jumps, there’s some movement. The sweet spot I’ve landed on is running it about half full – 24 ounces or roughly one standard water bottle – where it remains stable. Honestly, for most of my rides that’s all the water I need anyway. I know, I know, I need to get further from the parking lot.
The setup I’ve been digging most is pairing the pack at half capacity with a bottle of hydration supplement on the bike. The pack becomes your reserve tank for when you’re just thirsty, or when you’re feeling good and want to push the ride a little longer. It’s a flexible system that works well. A minor complaint is the hose magnet, which didn’t fully capture the hose at all times. It would be great to see POC use a stronger magnet here to keep the hose fully secure.
The VPD padding on the back & hip panel is a smart addition that most competing packs skip entirely. It’s there to protect you from your own gear in a crash, and it’s the kind of detail that makes you appreciate POC’s protection-first DNA. Finally, the side pockets deserve a mention, easily accessible on the move and perfect for trail snacks or anything you need to grab without stopping.
The Wolf’s Last Word
The POC Hip Pack Hydro 4L is the rare piece of kit that earns its premium price tag through genuine versatility and thoughtful design rather than just a flashy logo. If you’ve been lugging a full backpack around and want to go lighter, this could be your answer. If you want hydration on tap without the sweaty slab of a pack on your back, this delivers.
Run it light for the quick after-work rip, load it up for the big adventure day, or throw it on the bars for a gravel mission. It adapts to how you ride, not the other way around. The weight when fully loaded is real, and the hose magnet could be stronger, but neither is a dealbreaker on this well-executed pack.
Would I buy this with my own money? Without hesitation. At $190 the POC Hip Pack Hydro 4L is the pack I didn’t know I needed until using it.
