ABOUT TAILWIND NUTRITION
Tailwind Nutrition was born out of necessity in Durango, Colorado, when founder Jeff Vander Lou signed up for the Leadville 100 MTB with zero racing experience and paid the price with a stomach full of the wrong fuel. His solution was to chase what he called a “unicorn” clean, simple, effective nutrition that works with your body instead of against it. The result is a lineup built around one guiding principle: everything you need, nothing you don’t. No artificial colors, no fake stuff, no ingredients you need a chemistry degree to pronounce.
The lineup sent our way covers the full spectrum of ride nutrition. The Endurance Fuel is the flagship, designed to be your sole fuel source on longer efforts calories, electrolytes, and hydration all in one scoop that mixes clear in your bottle or hydration pack. The High Carb Fuel steps it up for high intensity efforts, delivering 90g of carbohydrates per serving in a 2:1 glucose-to-fructose ratio for maximum energy uptake. The Rapid Hydration is the everyday option, an electrolyte-focused, lower calorie formula for shorter rides or daily hydration without the sweeteners found in most competitors. Rounding out the lineup is the Recovery Mix, packing 20g of complete protein and all nine essential amino acids to rebuild muscle and replenish glycogen after the hard days. Made by athletes in Durango, Colorado, and backed by over 15,000 five-star reviews, Tailwind has clearly found an audience that keeps coming back.

THE DIRT
I do like and use a hydration mix on the regular, so when I received all of the Tailwind products I was a bit overwhelmed. Naturally I started with what I was most familiar with hydration mix.
The Rapid Hydration was the natural first stop. Easy to mix, light on flavor, and more sweet than salty which is exactly my preference. I worked through all the samples and landed on Strawberry Lemonade as my go-to, with Raspberry a close second. What I appreciated most was the simplicity of mixing them easily in a standard water bottle with no fuss, making them a great option to keep in the car, your gym bag, or anywhere you want to stay on top of hydration without thinking too hard about it.
Next up was the Endurance Fuel. It’s been a while since I’ve leaned on liquid fueling during a ride, and getting back to it was a welcome change. Sure, you can stuff a burrito in your frame storage and call it nutrition, and I’ve been there. But the Endurance Fuel has some real advantages over solid food on the bike. You’re getting carbohydrates, electrolytes, and better water absorption than plain water, all in one scoop. Liquids also empty from the stomach faster than solid food, getting energy to your muscles quicker when you need it most. The proof was in riding about an hour in I noticed a meaningful difference in how my legs felt compared to rides where I was running on fumes and stubbornness alone.
For the High Carb Fuel, I called in some expert help. My cousin Daniel has been racing for years and knows his way around a carbohydrate mix better than anyone I know, so I handed him the samples and asked him to put them through their paces on a proper race-effort ride. Here’s what he came back with: on a 38-mile ride with nearly 3,000 feet of climbing and close to 1,900 calories burned, he ran 90g of High Carb Fuel in his first bottle and 50g in his second, supplementing with additional carb gels along the way for a total of 324g of carbohydrates across the effort. His verdict — the 90g High Carb mix wasn’t too thick, mixed well, and fueled him through without any issues. If he were to do it again he’d run 90g in both bottles and carry a 50g packet as a mid-ride refill. His favorite of the two is the 90g option, but he sees real value in the 50g as a top-up on longer days.

Finally, the Recovery Mix. The flavor isn’t going to win any awards but the good news is the product works. I felt a noticeable difference in my soreness and was turning around for the next ride faster than usual. On to the bad news, I didn’t love the taste of any of the flavors I tried. The Strawberry, for instance, starts out tasting like strawberry but then shifts into a nutty, almond milk kind of finish that caught me off guard. The texture is very thin and quite foamy on top, which takes some getting used to. It’s the kind of product you use because it works, not because you’re excited to drink it.
The Wolf’s Last Word
Tailwind has built something genuinely useful here — a clean, simple nutrition system that covers you from the parking lot to the podium and back again. If you’re logging big miles or racing and want an all-in-one solution that won’t blow up your stomach mid-ride, the Endurance Fuel and High Carb Fuel are worth serious attention. The Rapid Hydration earns a permanent spot in the daily kit, not just ride days. And compared to the competition, the price point across the lineup is refreshingly reasonable for what you’re getting. Would I buy Tailwind with my own money? Selectively, the Rapid Hydration and Endurance Fuel are already on my list. The Recovery Mix didn’t win me over on flavor, but with over 1,200 five-star reviews on their website I’m clearly in the minority, worth trying for yourself. ![]()
