Welcome back to the future! Our latest Loam Wolf Edition giveaway bike just hopped out the DeLorean. What, you never noticed the bike rack behind Marty McFly’s car as he drove away from Ned Overend’s house in Back to the Future 29?
After months of hard work, we’re finally ready to unveil our brightest bike yet. We’ve dubbed this Specialized Stumpjumper Evo 29er Shreddy McFly.
THE BUILD
Our build started with a raw aluminum Stumpjumper Evo alloy frame and was the catalyst for our retro theme. The raw material pulled us back to our roots of welded frames and trippy fade paint jobs. We sent the frame and suspension up to Tony Baumann (Made Rad by Tony) so that he could paint match the frame, fork and coil spring to get that candy fade just right.
When it comes to retro suspension vibes we couldn’t think of a better fit than the new Marzocchi Z1 fork and Bomber rear shock. Their new line is the epitome of legacy product as it maintains the namesake of their early suspension products with modern day technology. Sean Estes was more than helpful in getting us all the parts we needed to make the suspension match this bike’s vibe just right.
For the component group we were lucky enough to link up with Craig Richey and Rob Bohncke of Race Face. We wanted to keep the build authentic throughout and working with a brand that has such a deep history in our sport just made sense. Combine that with the fact Race Face offers their components in a plethora of colors and the choice was a no-brainer.
For the cockpit we opted to run the brand new Turbine R stem with a polished silver finish and couldn’t be more stoked on how it looks. Sandwiched inside the new stem is a black Turbine R35 handlebar with red graphics and gum colored grips. Out back we used the Turbine dropper post and Aeffect saddle in all black.
Down low we used Race Face ARC 30 rims laced with silver spokes and nipples to a pair of shiny, silver Race Face Vault hubs. Wrapping the flashy wheels are what we keep calling the icing on the cake, Onza Porcupine tires. When we showed Hector Martinez of Bike Fettish our rendering of the bike, he had just the tire in mind. “We’re about to release a new Onza Porcupine that will match that bike perfectly,” he replied while simultaneously texting us a picture of the new tires piled in a box. Needless to say, we think he was right and the Onza Porcupines really take the bike to the next level.
Drivetrain spec is a bit of a mixed bag on Shreddy McFly. Race Face pedals and Next R carbon cranks drive the brand new 12-speed Shimano XT cassette and derailleur. Keeping in theme with our custom is king ethos, the awesome crew at Magura USA took our request at speed and quickly assembled some custom MT8 brakes. We think this four piston stoppers look particularly bad ass! Beautifully polished four pot calipers with red pucks installed to match with customized levers, adjusters and decals make these brakes a highlight of the build. No detail has been overlooked as master mechanic Drew Barber of Sagebrush Cycles meticulously assembled our latest bike.
